Senior Niagara Youth Orchestra Headed to Vienna
to Compete in International Youth and Music Festival
December 10, 2007 (St. Catharines) - The Senior Niagara Youth Orchestra (NYO) under the Baton of Maestro Michael Newnham will complete its 43rd season in Europe, performing in several cities as well as competing in the International Youth and Music Festival. It has been almost 10 years since the NYO last performed in Europe.
The Senior Youth Orchestra undertakes a tour every three years. Recent tours have included the “Back in the Saddle” Western Canada Tour of 2002, where they participated in the National Youth Orchestra Festival Canada Day performance at the Banff Festival of Music; and The “Maritime Tour 2005” where they participated in the Indian River Music Festival. In 2008, the NYO has set its sights on Europe: Salzburg, Prague, Budapest, and the International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna. Because of their hard work and dedication, the Senior Youth Orchestra is playing at a very high level. The NYO Association Board of Directors believes these talented young musicians have earned the opportunity to represent Niagara, as well as Canada, as they perform in these countries where classical music was born.
Young musicians, drawn from all over the Niagara Region, meet with their coaches and conductors every Saturday morning from September to May to rehearse for eight concerts each season. The Senior Youth Orchestra, currently consisting of members ranging from thirteen to twenty years of age, presents three full orchestral concerts and two chamber concerts. The Junior Youth Orchestra, which includes fifty members, ranging from nine to sixteen years of age, also presents three concerts. All concerts are open to the public. Tickets are still available for the next concerts on December 1st and 2nd. They are the culmination of countless hours of hard work and are always enjoyable and inspiring.
The Niagara Youth Orchestra has launched a fundraising campaign to help defray the cost of this tour. Their fundraising goal is $100,000, which represents approximately forty percent of the cost. As a registered charity, the Niagara Youth Orchestra Association is able to receipt donations for income tax purposes.
