Alvarez Fitness Kicks Off Relay for Life Cancer Fundraiser

Personal trainer Sandra Alvarez and her Beat It, Beat It Boot Camp team helped kick off this year's Relay for Life at Brock University. She and her team helped get teams warmed up for this 12-hour overnight walking relay event. More than 1,800 people descended on Brock University for this year's event and collectively they raised $310,000 for research and Cancer Society services. This is the second highest total raised in the event's nine-year history.

"Let's beat this disease somehow, some way" said Alvarez, who lost her father, Oscar to brain cancer. She has also lost clients and friends to the disease. When helping cancer patients her focus is on helping improve their quality of life. "I teach people happy pain, which means that they can get that happy burn instead of worrying about the radiation, the chemotherapy."

Sandra was the captain of the one of the many relay teams at this important cancer fundraiser. "A regimen of Pilates, light weights and stretching can do so much to help keep people's bodies working to their best ability, even while they're battling cancer" says Alvarez. "I have also found that the families of cancer patients as well as cancer survivors need this kind of general fitness training because in our sedentary society our fitness levels are not very high, and in my opinion leaves people more susceptible to cancer as well as other diseases."
